This circular route doesn’t just offer some of the best panoramic views on the western edge of the Peak District; it is a journey across 320 million years of geology and seven decades of secret military history. We set out toward our first destination, Croker Hill. Here, the concrete relics of the Cold War stand in stark contrast to the stunning countryside and incredible skyscapes surrounding them. Following well-defined trails, we step into a living tapestry of English history, traversing the last remnants of ancient Royal forests and hunting grounds as we begin our next ascent.
Standing at 506 metres with a distinct shark-fin profile, Shutlingsloe is famously known as the ‘Cheshire Matterhorn.’ We summit its steep slopes to enjoy a 360° view over our route and far into the high ground to the east, before descending back to our starting point.
