Get ready to invent, experiment and build together in this playful, hands-on workshop with master maker Matt Pang.
Working as a team, you'll use recycled and everyday materials to build an incredible chain reaction machine — a sequence of connected actions that begins with something simple (like a domino run) and builds to one big, spectacular finale!
This workshop is inspired by the gloriously over-engineered machines of Rube Goldberg, and led by master maker Matt Pang.
What to expect:
Creative Building with Recycled Materials - We’ll use 'junk' modelling materials — cardboard, tubes, tape, string and other reclaimed treasures — to design and build imaginative contraptions. No special skills needed, just curiosity and creativity!
Big Ideas - This workshop is participant-led, meaning everyone gets a chance to suggest ideas, test them out, and see what works. There’s plenty of experimenting, adjusting and celebrating small successes along the way.
Who is this for?
This workshop is open to anyone who wants to be involved – we’re expecting a mixed group of adults and young people.
Derbyshire Makes
This workshop has been funded as part of Glossop’s Derbyshire Makes programme. Join us on 9th May in Glossop for our main festival day, filled with puppet parades, live music, storytelling, exhibitions, and makers' markets. The festival day will be open from 11 am-5 pm in Glossop's Norfolk Square, Market Hall & Partington Theatre.
About the facilitator
Matt Pang is a Performer-Maker, “DIY engineer”, and community organiser who likes to build things, break them (on purpose), and then bring them to life in front of an audience. Performing since 2005, Matt has been creating and touring solo and duo shows around the world, sharing playful, inventive circus-inspired work that connects with people of all ages and backgrounds.
A self-taught maker, Matt’s creative process usually starts in the workshop, designing and constructing the strange and wonderful objects that fuel his performances. He has appeared at internationally renowned festivals, toured extensively across the UK, and works with schools and communities to spark creativity and STEM learning through hands-on performance and workshops.
Curiosity, problem-solving, and a love of reuse sit at the heart of Matt’s practice. In 2024, he founded the Hanham Repair Café and now leads repair-focused projects in local communities—bringing people together to share skills, fix things, and rediscover the joy of making, mending, and playing together.
