About this Event
Matt Otto is one of the most accomplished jazz saxophonists working today, and Saturday night at the Blue Room he's bringing his quartet for two sets of original compositions and reimagined standards.
An Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Kansas, Otto's credentials read like a jazz encyclopedia. He studied under Lee Konitz and Charlie Haden at the New School and CalArts. He's lived and performed in Japan, New York City, and Los Angeles. He co-founded the Los Angeles Jazz Collective. He's recorded on over 50 albums — including work with the Grammy-nominated Anthony Wilson Nonet — and his own releases on Origin Records have earned four-star reviews in DownBeat and All About Jazz.
But don't let the resume fool you into expecting anything clinical. Otto's playing is lyrical, exploratory, and deeply personal — a light tone with harmonic depth that invites you in rather than showing you out. His Kansas City-based quartet features some of the region's finest players, and together they create the kind of intimate, searching jazz that makes the Blue Room the perfect room for it.
Joining the quartet as featured vocalist is Heidi Lanita, adding another layer to what promises to be a special evening of music.
