The Gods Are All Here by Phil Okwedy
A compelling, one-person performance storytelling piece, exploring themes of family relationships, equality, racism and freedom, through finely interwoven myth, music, personal story and folktales.
When clearing his mother’s house, storyteller Phil Okwedy made an astonishing discovery of a series of love letters from his father to his mother.Extracts from these letters form the backdrop to a powerful and compelling performance that mixes extraordinary and everyday stories of myths, folktales and song from the African diaspora with Phil’s personal experiences of growing up as a child of dual heritage in 1960 &70’s Wales.
Charting the time of life when children are said to view their parents as gods, Phil considers if his parents were, in fact, the gods he had believed them to be…The Gods Are All Here is a touching, funny and evocative performance of one man revisiting stories of his childhood alongside themes of equality, racism, freedom and justice.
Phil Okwedy is a Welsh performance storyteller and myth-maker, born in Cardiff to a Welsh mother and Nigerian father. He draws deeply on his dual heritage and multiple cultures and performs regularly in storytelling clubs and festivals across Wales and England, as well as Internationally.
We will be live and in the room and also streaming via Zoom. We're loving our international reach and enjoy the 'shout outs' to our global audience. So, if you're willing and able, schmooze on down to the Imperial Rooms in Matlock and join us live. We are delighted to tell you that soup, cakes, teas coffees etc are available from our kitchen. We do still operate with good old fashioned cash, kerching! so bring your purse to cross our palms with silver. All monies from the kitchen help to fund our ongoing story nights, so PLEASE leave any other food items at home. You are still most welcome to bring a bottle of something cheeky with you.
We urge you to book in advance, if you are able as tickets often sell out.
To help our more technically challenged friends we are trialing having a very small number of tickets available on the door. We suggest you arrive early if you wish to secure one of these pay in person tickets.
