The rising of the Matariki star cluster signals the start of Matariki, the Māori New Year. This programme introduces tamariki and whānau to how Matariki connects us to people, to whānau and to the rhythms and seasons of the natural world. Mānawatia a Matariki!
Come and experience the magic of Matariki with your whānau this Hōtoke; nau mai, haere mai! After two successful years of programme delivery across Tāmaki and Pōneke, our Matariki kaupapa returns to the National Library.
A pou of the kaupapa is the reorua (bilingualism). Whānau and tamariki are guided through waiata, mihi, karakia and reflection to meet the whetū in the whānau of Matariki, remember loved ones who have passed, and cast wishes to Hiwa-i-te-rangi for the coming year. Another feature of the kaupapa are the forever popular glowing orbs, arā ko ngā pīataata o ngā whetū!
Ko Matariki e, te tohu o te tau. Ko tēnei, he kaupapa ātaahua ki te hāpai ngā mahi e whakawhānui ana te mōhiotanga o Matariki.
Bringing our stars to life
With the knowledge shared by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and our awesome team at He Tohu Tāmaki, ‘Matariki: Bringing Our Stars to Life’ connects us to Ngā Atua Māori, the pūrākau of Matariki (e ai ki te kōrero o Te Whare Wānanga) and how we honour this season of the Maramataka.
Tereora Crane (Senior Learning Facilitator, He Tohu Tāmaki) created the kaupapa for tamariki and whānau alike to deepen their connection to Matariki.
