Film production in the Nordic countries has historically drawn from a vast array of cultural sources, each of which has left its unique mark on this transnational art form. Come join Professor Tom Birnie on an introductory journey through the origins and development of Scandinavian film over the past 100 years. The focus of this course will be to acquaint participants with the traditions, directors. themes and narrative styles of this broad and rich subject. Our course will be conducted as a series of informational workshop sessions in which we view, learn about and discuss the films listed below. Participants have the option to sign up for the entire course on beginning on October 3rd, or you can register for individual films listed below:

About the Instructor:
Thomas Birnie holds a Ph.D. in German Literature, with a doctoral minor in Scandinavian Studies, from the University of Washington. He has taught Scandinavian subjects at Portland State University since 1990 and is actively engaged in Nordic events locally.
