Bach often adapted his own works—as well as those of others—to meet the strenuous liturgical demands placed upon him as Thomaskantor. The Mass in G minor, most likely written around 1738–39, is a reworking of movements from four cantatas (17, 79, 138, 179). The motet Der Gerechte kömmt um, on the other hand, is a reworking of someone else's work: most likely that of Johann Kuhnau (1660–1722), Bach's immediate predecessor as Thomaskantor. We ask for a donation at each session of $10 per person to cover a stipend for the music director and other expenses. But any amount is welcome, and no one is turned away.
