Immigration policy is complex, personal, and often deeply misunderstood. This presentation will explore how current systems developed, how detention and enforcement function today, and what alternatives might look like. Whether you are new to the topic or have been following it closely, this evening will offer historical context for what is happening today and what can and should be done differently. Speaker Kari Hong has practiced immigration law for 25 years. Her clients have come from six continents and more than 54 countries. She has represented over 350 immigrants before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and 150 individuals in immigration court. Her scholarship and commentary have appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, SCOTUSblog, and CNN. Kari grew up in Northfield, Minnesota, and was a tenured law professor at Boston College for a decade. She currently serves as the Ninth Circuit Attorney with Florence Immigration & Refugee Rights. And in case you're wondering — she also plays in an adult recreational hockey league, giving her a unique perspective on where “ice” does (and does not!) belong.
This program is offered in partnership with Tapestry, a bilingual and multicultural community of faith in Richfield. A pop-up maker's market will be onsite during the event as well.
