A workshop for singers and playersLed by Patrick Craig
Summerhill Bowling Club, Winchester Ter, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 6EH
Time: 10.00 for 10:30–16:30 Pitch: A=440
Mary, Mary quite contrary
Spain was at the heart of a Catholic revival after the threat of Luther’s north European revolution, and Mary the Mother of Jesus stood at the heart of this revival. Various Spanish composers stepped up to create monumental works in her honour. Victoria will lead the way with his Magnificat primi toni, Salve Regina and Ave Maria, all for eight voices. We will also be looking at music for Mary Magdalen and her pivotal role at the resurrection including Guerrero’s dramatic Maria Magdalene. Both women’s identities have been muddled by Catholic tradition and this programme will explore both the expansion of their theologies and attempt to rediscover the women behind the myths.
