About this Event
This programme performed by the Marmen Quartet brings together three landmark chamber works spanning more than a century of musical innovation. Haydn’s String Quartet in E-flat major, affectionately known as “The Joke,” opens the concert with elegance and humour, its famous teasing pauses and unexpected ending a masterclass in musical wit.
Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor, his only work in the genre, follows. Its luminous textures, bold harmonies and cyclical form signal a decisive break from tradition and established Debussy as a leading voice of modernism.
After the interval, Fiachra Garvey joins the quartet for Franck’s Piano Quintet in F minor, providing an impassioned conclusion to the programme. Intensely expressive and richly textured, the work was considered shockingly emotional at its premiere and remains a compelling and dramatic centrepiece of the chamber music repertoire.
