About this Event

Join us for our next Lunchtime Talk with Roger Proctor from Tidetech Commercial Marine, a Hobart-based oceanographic data services company supplying high quality ocean information to maritime industries and recreational users around the world.

Tidetech specialises in combining global ocean forecast data with high-resolution coastal modelling, supporting decision-making at sea. Increasingly, commercial vessels are integrating this data with AI-driven voyage planning tools, enabling optimised routes, reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

In this talk, Roger will discuss:

• key features of ocean circulation

• how the use of ocean data has evolved over time

• current and emerging applications, including AI and sustainability

Roger moved to Tasmania in 2008, becoming Director of the Australian Ocean Data Network within Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System. Before that, he spent 25 years as a research scientist at the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool.

In 2008, he co-founded Tidetech with professional sailor Penny Haire to provide ocean forecasting for recreational racing. Their early success included supplying data used by Quest, the overall winner of the 2008 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Tidetech has since supported major elite sailing campaigns including the America’s Cup and national Olympic teams, and now works with commercial shipping operators, sports technology companies, ECDIS manufacturers and Hydrographic Offices worldwide.

Our Lunchtime Talks series is supported by Arts Tasmania.
