Over the past seven years, van Hall has undertaken repeated journeys to Japan, developing a profound connection with its cultural and spiritual traditions. Drawing upon the teachings of Fūshikaden (The Transmission of the Flower), the seminal 15th-century treatise by Noh master Zeami, The Flowering Spirit meditates on the idea of beauty as an ever-renewing, transient phenomenon—a spiritual blossoming that emerges through form and stillness.
In this series, van Hall presents a collection of portraits that fuse the meticulous realism of Dutch classical painting with the restraint and quiet poetics of Japanese aesthetics. Each work portrays a woman with her eyes gently closed, dressed in what appears to be traditional attire yet infused with subtle, fantastical elements. The subjects seem suspended between worlds—echoes of a forgotten or imagined Japan, existing in a space where the material and the spiritual converge.
Through these tranquil figures, van Hall explores themes of serenity, introspection, and transcendence. The closed eyes of his subjects invite viewers to turn inward, transforming the act of looking into an act of reflection. The artist’s interest lies not only in depicting external beauty, but in invoking an atmosphere of inner peace—a visual meditation that resonates with the principles of Zen.
As the artist notes, “I want these paintings to act as mirrors, to transmit a sense of calm and quiet contemplation to the viewer. They are not about seeing, but about sensing.”
With The Flowering Spirit, Marinus van Hall extends his dialogue between East and West, realism and reverie, tradition, and imagination—offering a contemplative vision of the human spirit in bloom.
The Flowering Spirit opens on November 8th and will remain on view until December 8th.
