About this Event
Join us for a guided walk along the shoreline of the Albany Bulb with a local marine biologist as your guide! We'll explore the fascinating tidepool creatures that make their home in the rocky intertidal zones around the Bulb — from sea anemones and crabs to algae, barnacles, and more.
Whether you're a curious first-timer or a seasoned tide-pooler, this is a wonderful opportunity to slow down, get close to the water's edge, and discover the surprisingly rich marine life right in our backyard.
Wear sturdy shoes you don't mind getting wet, and bring layers — it can be breezy out on the Bulb! Please read "logistics" below for information on hazards and challenges of this sometimes slippery walk.
We hope to see you there!
About our guide:
Veronica Johnson is a marine biologist, science educator, and artist with a lifelong passion for the natural world. She spent nine years as a biologist at The Exploratorium and also served as a whale watching naturalist for San Francisco Whale Tours. She has been involved with The Marine Mammal Center for nearly two decades, working in animal care and rehabilitation. She grew up tidepooling and seeking out wildlife in natural habitats, and her deep sense of curiosity and observation have shaped both her science career and her creative work — which frequently draws on her fascination with wildlife and biology.

Important Logistical Informations
Family-friendly; designed for ages 8 and up. Children under 12 should come with a parent.
Please meet between 9:45-10am at the bathrooms near the parking lot.
We’ll start walking promptly at 10am--please don't be late! We will walk about 1.5 miles total roundtrip over dirt trails, algae-covered rocks and sometimes uneven and sloping ground.
IMPORTANT: We will be walking on some wobbly and extremely slippery rocks where even surefooted people sometimes get a bit wet. If you do not feel comfortable in these conditions, please consider joining a different Love the Bulb nature walk when we will be on more stable ground.
What to wear: comfortable closed-toe shoes that can get wet and muddy with good tread on the soles (sturdy sneakers or light hiking boots--no Tevas or open-toed sandals), layers, including a windbreaker (it can be very windy!), and a hat.
Synthetic fabric and synthetic or wool socks will be more comfortable and less chilly if you get wet than cotton.
What to bring: Water and sunscreen in pockets or backpack. No shoulder bags, purses, or water bottles that are not in backpacks or carriers (you'll need two free hands for maximum mobility and balance). Feel free to bring binoculars and a frisbee (for holding critters for temporary viewing).
