Marian Friedl, born in the Czech Republic in 1979, studied the double bass at the Jaroslav Jezek Conservatory in Prague with famous Czech player and composer Jaromir Honzak, and ethnomusicology at Charles University in Prague with renown composer, researcher, and shakuhachi player Vlastislav Matousek.
At present, he is a freelance musician as well as a teacher at the Department of Musicology at Palackeho University in Olomouc (Czechia) and elsewhere. He also acts as an independent researcher, publicist, composer, and arranger. He is dedicated to reviving the playing of forgotten instruments from Western Carpathians, music production, music creation, popularization of folk music and improvisation. He performs concerts on double bass, clarinet, folk flutes, bagpipes, kobza, small dulcimer and other instruments in genres ranging from classical music to folklore, world music and jazz.
He is a member of several musical projects of different genres: free jazz plays with Norwegian-Czech Quartet (www.nocz.eu), world music with his band Baroshi & Marian Friedl (www.baroshi.cz), folk music from the Beskydy Mountains region with RukyNaDudy band (www.rukynadudy.cz), Sephardic music with Misterios del Amor (www.donio.cz/misterios-del-amor), baroque-jazz fusion with Telemannia (https://www.plaisirsdemusique.org/programme/telemannia/?lang=en), Moravian chanson with Ještě je project (vladimirjavorsky.cz).
He has recorded more than 30 albums with outstanding musicians and producers from Czech scene as well as from abroad (ex. Iva Bittová, Liselotte Rokyta, Mehdi Aminian Jazi, Didrik Ingvaldsen, Peter Breiner, Stano Palúch, Casey Driessen and others). In 2011, he performed at the prestigious TEDxPrague conference. In 2016, his project Beranci a vlci got a prestigious Angel Award, the Czech equivalent of a Grammy award, and its live performances were recorded by Czech TV and TV Noe. He was also part of the project Materstina of Jiri Slavik, which was awarded the same prize in 2015. He has performed in most of the European countries as well as in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Turkey.
In this concert he will perform on different types of flutes (koncovka) from the region and sing.
