March’s Shipley Green Drinks - Linda Pentz Gunter “No To Nuclear” March’s Shipley Green Drinks

Linda Pentz Gunter returns to Shipley Green Drinks to introduce her new book on the nuclear power industry, “No to Nuclear, Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives, Derails Climate Progress and Provokes War” - join us for this important discussion
“Nuclear power is everywhere in the news. We are told it’s needed to solve climate change, to keep electricity bills down and to deliver jobs; even that it’s “green” energy. The new reactors will be cheaper and safer, promoters claim, and have solved the radioactive waste problem.
But is any of this true?
In her new book — No To Nuclear. Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives, Derails Climate Progress and Provokes War— Linda Pentz Gunter debunks the cheaper, safer, faster and cleaner myths, but she also takes a look at the nuclear power story from the human perspective; the forgotten faces all along the nuclear chain, from uranium mining to nuclear power plants to the bomb.
What she finds is that nuclear power and its logical successor, nuclear weapons, have long harmed — and continue to prey upon — those who are the least resourced to fight back, often Indigenous peoples or communities of colour.
Among those seeking to expand nuclear power are the billionaire class eager to power their massive AI-driven data centers, but they, like the nuclear corporations, expect taxpayers and ratepayers to pay for their excesses. The book argues that theirs is the perpetuation of a longtime colonialist adventurism that ensures the suffering of the many to enrich the few.
Finally, the nuclear industry has damaged not only human lives but our entire ecology, destroying terrestrial and marine environments on which wildlife also depend. As we ignore nature and our magical and mysterious place in the universe, Linda argues, we risk becoming anesthetized to a level of environmental destruction that should be utterly unacceptable.
