Marbling Workshop -on Ceramic Vase & Paper

Join us in our professional art studio in Amsterdam’s vibrant NDSM district and experience the magic of painting on water with pigments.

What is marbling?
Marbling is a centuries-old technique of aqueous surface design, where patterns are created directly on water and then transferred to a surface. Traditionally used for decorating book covers and endpapers, this expressive medium allows you to create designs resembling stone, waves, or florals. It’s playful, creative, and always surprising.

Workshop structure:

• Introduction & Demo (15 minutes): Learn how to prepare chemical-free colours and marbling water, use the tools, and practice basic techniques.
• Practice on Paper: Begin by experimenting with pigments on water and printing your designs on paper. This stage lets you explore both abstract and floral forms, such as tulips - one of the Netherlands’ iconic symbols.
• Final Piece on a Ceramic Vase: After practising on paper, you’ll apply your chosen design onto a ceramic vase, creating a unique and lasting artwork to take home.

Who is it for?
No experience is required. The workshop is beginner-friendly and designed for anyone seeking a relaxing, sensory, and creative session. You can work independently or collaborate with others.

You’ll be provided with:

• Marbling trays and natural pigments
• A4-size paper (3 pieces) – to practice your designs and explore different techniques
• Medium-size ceramic vase (1 piece) – for your final unique artwork to take home
• Waterproof ink pen – to add finishing touches or signatures
• Clips & rope – for drying and displaying your prints
• Gloves and aprons – to keep you comfortable and clean
• Drinks and refreshments – to enjoy during the workshop
  Good to know: All materials are handmade at the studio from raw pigments, oil, and water; chemical-free, safe to use.

Art Studio Amsterdam NDSM is located in Tree House NDSM, just a 1-minute walk from the NDSM ferry and 13 minutes away from Amsterdam Centraal Station.
