About this Event

Join us for the Spring 2026 High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud Computing Workshop, open to all researchers from Manitoba institutions. This is a great opportunity to learn about local and national (Digital Research Alliance of Canada) research computing infrastructure, and to enhance your skills in using HPC systems, OpenStack community cloud. The workshop will be in-person and take place on May 20-22, 2026, at the University of Manitoba (Fort Garry campus), lecture hall E2-165, Engineering building. The workshop will feature a mix of talks and hands-on sessions spread across three days, each focused on a progressive set of skills.


Day 1 — Getting Started with HPC

  • Overview of National Digital Research Infrastructure.
  • Introduction to BASH Linux shell scripting.
  • Connecting to HPC systems and managing data transfers.
  • Interactive computing with OpenOnDemand and Jupyter Web Portals.
  • Data access and movement with Globus and Nextcloud.

Day 2 — HPC Workflows and Containers

  • Managing HPC software environments with Lmod modules.
  • Running and managing Jobs with the SLURM scheduler.
  • Introduction to Software Containers in HPC (Apptainer/Singularity and Docker/Podman).

Day 3 — AI in HPC and Cloud Computing

  • AI in HPC: running models in Jupyter Notebooks, using AI agents, and fine-tuning models with LoRA in batch scripts.
  • Getting started with the community OpenStack cloud.
  • Introduction to OpenStack object storage.


Workshop Details

  • What to Bring: A laptop is required to fully participate in the hands-on sessions. 
  • Registration: The workshop is free, but RSVP via Eventbrite is required. You can register for individual sessions of interest.
  • Optional: an active CCDB account is not required but recommended. 

The exact program schedule will be emailed to all registered participants one week before the event.
