African American Museum of Dallas Docent Training

Join Our Docent Team for Mandela: The Official Exhibition

Make history come alive — inspire visitors — learn and volunteer.

The African American Museum, Dallas invites high‑school and college students and adults to serve as volunteer docents for Mandela: The Official Exhibition. This internationally acclaimed exhibition offers a comprehensive, deeply human portrait of Nelson Mandela, developed with his family and cultural institutions. It features more than 150 artifacts, rare films, and immersive environments that trace Mandela’s journey from rural South Africa to the presidency. Join us and celebrate Mandela’s values of courage, justice, reconciliation, and freedom.

Why become a docent?

• Be the face of the museum. Docents are ambassadors who welcome visitors and guide them through exhibits, sharing insights that enrich the museum experience.

• Sharpen your skills. Develop public‑speaking and storytelling abilities, learn about museum operations, and explore African‑American art, history, and culture.

• Make a difference. Help guests of all ages engage with Mandela’s story and inspire them to reflect on leadership, courage, and social justice.

What do docents do?

Docents lead tours, speak to small and large groups, and assist museum staff in various roles. Responsibilities include:

• Guiding visitors through the exhibition and answering questions.

• Welcoming guests at the information desk and providing phone assistance.

• Assisting museum operations, such as in the library and gift shop, and helping ensure gallery security.

• Attending training and staying informed about the museum’s exhibitions and policies.

Training & Commitment

Docent volunteers are required to attend one 2‑hour training session at the African American Museum – 3536 Grand Avenue, Fair Park, Dallas, Texas. Dr. Marvin Dulaney, historian, and Mr. Robert Edison, Retired Dallas ISD Educator will facilitate the learning sessions, which cover museum history, tour techniques, and visitor engagement strategies. Choose one of the following sessions:

• Tueday 26 May 2026 — 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

• Wednesday 27 May 2026 — 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

• Thursday 28 May 2026 — 10:00 AM – 11:00 aM

During training, you will receive a docent handbook and guidance from museum educators. Docents commit to serving for the duration of the exhibition (June 13 – November 1 2026) and volunteering for scheduled shifts.
