Welcome to Managing Pests + Disease in the Garden event at Plant Chicago!
Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll learn how to keep your garden healthy and thriving. We are in season for a flourishing garden so pests and diseases are prone to visit our garden as well. Some of these pests and diseases can be mitigated and prevented. Join us to learn how David from Contemporary Farmer, Inc. about pest management strategies throughout Cook & Lake County.
You will learn how to:
- improve the health of your soil beds & garden
- use companion planting strategies to create a welcoming environemnt for friendly critters
- make natural ammendments to buld a healthy soil bed like a compost tea blend
Attendees can take home seeds and seedling
About the Instructor: Davíd Toledo (he/they) is a queer Xicano, ecofeminist, a native Illinoisian, and has been growing food organically for seven years. He has a degree in Sustainable Community Development with minors in Sociology and Social Justice from Northland College in Ashland, WI. After receiving his degree, he was a teacher through City Year and volunteered at a community farm which led to the idea of starting a business himself. He founded Contemporary Farmer, Inc. in 2019 with the goal of connecting urban, rural, and suburban farming initiatives and fostering intergenerational education around regenerative agriculture.
In the long-term, he plans to help others start businesses that build local equity. When Davíd isn’t volunteering with other local farming initiatives, he spends time cooking, gathering with friends and family around food, biking, and being intentional about personal time through self-care routines.
