Join Us for A Night Out at The Sound Temple!
Take this rare opportunity to meet with a very dear Elder that we lovingly call Uncle Noel. Dr Noel Nannup is a well respected Elder who loves spending time with us at The Sound Temple, a place he loves to create events and especially to share his stories.
We will share a meal in community, which is such a lovely way to come together, to chat, to meet and to settle in. The Mandala Room will be home for the very special intimate screening of Mammung – The Whale Story.
A very special Art Piece “Mammung” will also be on display over these community screenings. Elina El Daher and Uncle Noel created a collaborative community silk piece that during the processing the steaming of the silk created what looks like Whales – so it is in the Gallery Space to be shared with our visitors.
About the Film
MAMMUNG is the Noongar name for the Whale.
Around 10,000 years ago Western Australia experienced rapid sea-level rise. At that time, the indigenous Noongar people adapted to the loss of almost 30% of their land as the population moved inland ahead of a 'slow moving tsunami'. MAMMUNG the film explores the living memory that Noongar people hold of this event. The film follows Dr Noel Nannup in recalling the significance of places which are now below the sea and explaining the process of change that indigenous people endured through the narrative dreaming story of MAMMUNG the whale.
The film explains the song lines and how they come in from Rottnest Island wiggling around off the coast of Fremantle and into the beaches of Cottesloe, then to the top of the hill at Bold Park, Floreat,
Churchlands and into Herdsman Lake. The film links these ancient journey ways into what we see today and gives us all a perspective that would not be possible without the sharing and the most important recording of this dreamtime story.
Indigenous cultures in Australia are one of the very few who have a living memory of a period climatic change that rivals what we are seeing today. MAMMUNG the film challenges us all to ask: can we learn to understand and value this rich body of knowledge as we too adapt to a changing climate? and what awaits us if we don't?
Please join us for this intimate screening of MAMMUNG, For more information about MAMMUNG the film go to https://www.mammungthefilm.com
We look forward to welcoming you!
