Starting us off on the Saturday night is John Etheridge who rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond and has been described by Pat Metheny as, "One of the best guitarists". He is a prodigiously gifted and creative player whose approach to music can only be described as 'eclectic' as he refuses to accommodate or even acknowledge artificial musical boundaries. He is a regular guest on Jazz Line-up -most recently a live duo set from the Bath Festival with pianist John Horler, and is often a guest on Radio3's In Tune programme.
Sunday sees a triple bill of artists from May and May’s String Islands, Jazz duo Gina Griffin and Andy Christie (who you may have seen at our Sofa Sessions) and local folk outing The Picture Framers.
String Islands is an off shoot of the incredibly creative Sound Islands which encompasses a range of locally grown and crafted instruments. May & May, a father and son duo perform to a self created sound montage weaving textures and layering deriving from homemade instruments, remodelled junk guitars and traditional clarinet and violin pairings. This will be a spectacular first outing for this newly shaped English countryside collage of sound.
Gina and Andy perform original arrangements of jazz standards and Hot Club. Gina's unique command over the violin, often scat singing in harmony is mesmerising and Andy's clean polished jazz guitar in the vein of Metheny and Etheridge underpins the violin harmonies perfectly. This is classic perfect Sunday music vibes.
The Picture Framers are Viv Sherman, a singer and songwriter based in North Wiltshire. Guitarist for Pack Horse Ceilidh band and occasionally other bands too. Often seen playing in music sessions in his local area. Viv also uses melodeon to achieve drones, chords and simple melodies in the songs to compliment Chez's banjo playing. The other half of The Picture Framers is Chez Dunford, an independent musician performing both self-penned and traditional folk songs. Based in Bristol and the Forest of Dean. She plays piano accordion, banjo and occasionally trumpet. Chez is a theatre maker, circus artist and community practitioner using music and story to connect people.
