A free Zoom workshop for parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex.
About this Event

People on the autistic spectrum often use the strategy of masking or camouflaging when responding to the demands of varying contexts. It is a coping strategy frequently used by autistic children and young people, particularly in the school setting, but can cause them significant stress. This workshop will help you to understand and recognise the signs and impact of masking, and look at ways to help.

The topics we will cover include:

  • What is masking and why autistic people mask
  • The impact of masking
  • Exploring neurodiversity as this is relevant to co-occurring diagnoses
  • Strategies that will help children and young people to 'unmask'
  • Anxiety in autism and how to reduce the perceived need for masking
  • Strategies parents and carers and schools can use to help autistic children and young people feel comfortable enough NOT to mask

Please note this workshop is funded by Reaching Families for parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex only. It is not suitable for professionals.

After booking - Once you have booked a place you will receive an email confirmation from Eventbrite. Prior to the workshop you will receive a Zoom link to access the session. You will need to download Zoom in advance but you don’t need to set up an account if you don’t wish to. Zoom can be used on PC’s/Laptops and mobile devices such as iPad, phones and tablets. If you have any questions, please get in touch and we will happily talk you through setting this up if required.

If workshop is full - places can become available and we are very proactive at ensuring all places are taken on our workshops. In order to join the waitlist, please open Eventbrite via an internet browser, rather than using the Eventbrite app, in order to book yourself onto the waitlist.
