About this Event
Making Every Contact Count (MECC) fits with the NHS Forward View & NHS long term plan with its preventative approach and is about taking opportunities to raise the issue of healthy lifestyles and signposting if appropriate. As we know, starting the conversation with someone around changes to their lifestyle can be difficult, so the training is about building on your strengths / assets e.g., good listener, good motivator - in a ‘person or community centered approach’.
MECC aims to provide people with the tools and confidence to begin those conversations and is an approach that can be used by anyone who comes into contact with the general public be that health professionals, council employees or leisure staff.
It will help people understand the role they play in delivering brief advice and the importance of this in helping people facilitate change. It is about empowering people to make changes to their lifestyle not telling them how to live their lives.
MECC training covers the following learning outcomes.
1. What is Public Health & how to improve population health through small lifestyle changes
2. Facts on Public Health’s main health topics, Smoking, Alcohol, Physical Activity, 5 a day, Five ways to wellbeing
3. Oldham’s ill-health and links to inequalities

6. Reasons we adopt unhealthy habits and how small changes can improve health
