Join artist Kerrie O’Leary for a hands-on experience at Makerversity, where you will explore the exciting transformation of data into tangible art. This workshop invites participants to dive into the world of data visualisation, utilising open-source platforms to create physical artworks using a pen plotter and physical computing components.

Workshop Overview

This two-part workshop is designed to guide participants through the complete process of data visualisation, from initial data preparation to the creation of physical representations using technology.

Part 1: Creative Coding and Pen-plotter

Sourcing and Preparing your Data: Learn about various ways of retrieving information using API keys, CSV files, and JSON formats.

Data Visualization Techniques: Learn how to convert a CSV file into visuals with creative coding using p5.js

Outcome: Export your creation as an SVG file and bring your design to life using a pen plotter.

Part 2: Breathing Life into Data

Introduction to Arduino and Physical Computing: Discover how to integrate physical computing components such as servo motors, DC motors or LEDs.

Outcome: Interact with basic circuits that respond to data changes, adding an interactive dimension to your creations.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own SVG files to experiment plotting with different pens with the drawing machine to personalise their artworks.

This workshop is for artists, designers, and anyone interested in the intersection of technology and art. Whether you are a beginner or have some experience in data visualisation or creative coding you'll gain valuable skills and insights to advance your practice.

Capacity: The number of participants for this workshop will be limited to allow for an intimate and engaging experience.
