Make Your Own Incense Workshop

Craft locally grown herbs (many from her own garden) into your own all-natural incense for smoke cleansing or just to make your space smell gorgeous. Your personalized scents can enhance meditation, relaxation, yoga, or spiritual practice.

Learn more about sacred smoke from herbs, flowers, and resins, and explore their practical, historical, and spiritual uses. Rissa will offer an overview on cultural uses of white sage, palo santo, and pinon use for "smudging and saging," and alternatives.

She will discuss combining herbs into incense, safe handling techniques, and connecting to the plant world as a creative medium. All supplies, dried herbs & spices, incense medium, and maple syrup will be provided, as well as a written overview of the plants used and basic formula instructions, so you can keep crafting natural incense at home.

• All students will leave with a batch of their own handmade incense. Great for gifts, too and Mother's Day is coming up!
• Age: Appropriate for guests 14 and up, however you know your child best.
• Location: Hosted by Josh Johnson Creative Studio, 56 South Duke Street York, PA, United States, Pennsylvania 17401. The door is on the corner.
• Limited Spots: There are only 9 spots for this class, which has frequently sold out larger venues. Tickets will be sold from $9 to $20 on a sliding scale and once it's full, it's full.
• ADA info and Parking: The Josh Johnson Creative Studio has a restroom on-site and there are several steps to enter. The workshop area floor is hardwood. There is no parking lot, only on-street parking with meters. The closest parking garage is about one block away at 41 E Market St.
• Refunds: Tickets can only be refunded for ANY reason until 3 days before the event, (that means until 7pm on March 22). At that time, all supplies are bought and each guest is accounted for. If you cannot attend after that time, there are no refunds. After that time, please give your ticket to a friend.
• Tickets: Please note, you do not need to print out your ticket. You will get a confirmation via email using the email associated with your Eventbrite account. Please check there and save paper!
• Disclaimer: Incense is NOT intended to consume! Smoke cleansing is not advised for those sensitive to smoke; with delicate lungs/throat; or a lung/throat health condition. Avoid over-exposure to any kind of smoke at all times. If you have a known allergy/sensitivity to any specific plant, do not use incense that contains it.

• About Rissa ~ Rissa Miller is an editor, author, herbalist, seer, and storyteller. Her storytelling expertise stems from extensive research into the area of esoteric history, including ghosts, witchcraft, cryptids, and folklore. Rissa believes the most enduring stories teach us not only about humanity's past, but also give reason to reflect on our own present beliefs and realities. She leads ghost tours and gives lively history talks in York, Lancaster, Hanover and around the region and country.

It's rare to find Rissa without tea. No matter where she is or what she's doing, a mug of green tea is her constant companion. Tea is one part of her love of plants. She holds a deep reverence for plants and the answers they offer, whether as tasseographs in a teacup, smoke in the air, a healing salve for the skin, a plant on the windowsill, or nourishment for the body. She studied herbalism at Chestnut School for Herbal Medicine and is a member of the American Herbalist Guild.
