Concord Community Organization Launches Unity in the Community Workshop Series
Chicago, IL – November 4, 2024 – Concord Community Organization (CCO) is excited to announce the launch of its Unity in the Community initiative, a series of free workshops and events designed to foster inclusivity, support, and unity within the local community. This inaugural workshop will focus on dementia support for Black and Brown individuals, emphasizing the importance of maintaining meaningful connections across diverse communities.
The first workshop, titled "Maintaining Connections with Black and Brown Individuals with Dementia", will take place on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 1:00 PM at Concord Missionary Baptist Church, 6319 S. Kimbark Ave, Chicago, IL. Led by dementia care expert Jennifer Stoner, MS, CTRS, CDP, CMDCP, this workshop will provide valuable insights and strategies for caregivers, families, and community members.
Program Focus:
Interacting with a person with dementia can be very challenging. People with dementia are affected in a variety of ways which can have an impact on their relationships with family and friends. Dementia is progressive, so the person’s abilities are changing which can make interaction difficult.
There can be memory problems which may begin mild and then become more severe. There can be symptoms which affect communication abilities and understanding. There can also be behavioral symptoms that are often out of character for the individual and are confusing for the people around them.
If visiting and talking with a friend or family member who has dementia becomes too difficult or emotionally draining, visitors may choose to decrease or eliminate the time spent together. If family members and friends can learn ways to increase the chances of having a more pleasant visit or interaction, both parties will benefit. This program will focus on possible ways to have more meaningful interaction.
