Peacefully Coexisting with Conflict through Curiosity and Skepticism
A Different Approach
When was the last time you called someone to tell them that you were wrong? We’re so fixated on our truths that we don’t have the latitude to create room for others’ truths. The result is that we can no longer talk with people with whom we disagree, to the point of estranging friends, co-workers, and even family. The divide is vast and, when taken in the context of our time on earth, unnecessary.
Taking a different approach to navigating conflicting viewpoints is probably necessary, as the way things are going now, we’re going in the wrong direction. Adapting a new mindset and becoming very intentional about the usefulness of curiosity and skepticism will open lines of communication, not necessarily to come to a consensus on the truth, but to be more comfortable with points of view that conflict with your own. Resolving conflict might not be an achievable outcome, but peacefully co-existing with it is very possible.
- What role can ambivalence play in your ability to not place a stake in the ground?
- What are good questions to ask that inspire deeper thinking in people on the “other side?”
- Without a doubt, we have fears playing in the background that are destructive to meaningful discourse. What can we do about them?
- Is it possible to win an argument without the other person losing?

Howie Milstein decided early in his career to question conventional thinking and seek the truth that is rooted in unbiased observation. As in the scientific disciplines, Howie believes that its more meaningful to live an evidence-based life and lead evidence-based communities.
