Gei Wais are traditional intertidal shrimp ponds that use natural tidal flows to regulate water exchange, forming a unique wetland system that supports rich biodiversity. These habitats are important feeding and breeding grounds for a wide range of aquatic species such as shrimp, fish, crabs, and other invertebrates. WWF-Hong Kong manages the last 17 remaining gei wais in Hong Kong, all located within Mai Po Nature Reserve. The RGS-HK is pleased to offer a seasonal evening field trip featuring traditional shrimp harvesting and dinner at Mai Po Nature Reserve.
The highlight of the evening will be a hands-on gei wai shrimp harvesting experience, offering participants the rare opportunity to take part in traditional harvesting methods while learning about the ecological and conservation value of gei wais.
