Mahjong instructors Emily and Bev of The Canasta and Mahjong Connection will help you learn and improve your game and connect with other players each week!
Learn to play American Mahjong at Waban Library Center in Newton. Choose from two options.

3 Week Learn To Play Series ($150 for the series or $50 per date)
March 4th, March 11th and March 18th
This is perfect for anyone with no prior experience or someone who wants a back to basics refresher. Includes instructional handouts and a laminated cheat sheet.

March 25th, April 1st, April 8th
This is perfect for anyone with no prior experience or someone who wants a back to basics refresher. Includes instructional handouts and a laminated cheat sheet.
INTRO TO MAHJONG AGENDA:
Intro Mahjong Week 1 (3/4 or 3/25)
- History/ of mahjong, learn the tiles and deal, understand how to read the NMJL card, learn the Charleston, experience a general flow of game play
Intro Mahjong Week 2 (3/11 or 4/1)
- Take a deeper dive into the Charleston strategy, solidify rules of game play, and play ~2 games with instructor support.
Intro Mahjong Week 3 (3/18 or 4/8)
- Review important rules of the game, discuss basic strategies, and play ~2-3 games with instructor support. Be prepared to play with anyone at the conclusion of the class!

Guided Play ($35 per date)
Pre-req: an intro course or equivalent experience. Once you understand the basics, you will play at a table and an instructor will circulate and provide support as needed and strategy help. Sign up for one or multiple dates and meet new players!
Come solo and meet other players or bring your group! A full mahjong set-up will be provided during class, but please bring your NMJL card.

Your Instructors:
We are Beverly and Emily, a mother-daughter duo and experienced Canasta and American Mah Jongg instructors. We’ve taught hundreds of students and are passionate about making these games accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Beverly is a retired teacher, principal, and special education administrator. Emily is a high school special education teacher.

Photo/Video Policy: Photographs and videos will be taken at the classes and shared on social media, our websites, and for marketing purposes for The Canasta Connection and Waban Library Center. At the start of the event, we will ask you to sign a release form. Please inform us ahead of time if you wish to opt out of photos and videos taken during the classes.
Refunds
Refunds are allowed up until 7 days prior to the first class. Unfortunately we are not able to refund the cost of the eventbrite fee. If you are unable to attend within 7 days of the first class, you may have a friend take your place, or reach out to us.
