Join us for Mahjong Mondays at Kimpton Marlowe Hotel!
Learn to play American Mahjong at Kimpton Marlowe Hotel in Cambridge! Introducing a three week beginner series at The Bambara Kitchen and Bar. Mahjong instructors Emily and Bev of The Canasta and Mahjong Connection will help you learn and improve your game and connect with other players each week!
Sip on a mahjong-themed cocktail or order from the mahjong inspired food menu, as part of Kimpton Marlowe Hotel's Mahjong and Mingle series (food and drink purchased separately).
The three week beginner series is perfect for brand-new players or anyone looking for a back to basics refresher. No prior experience is required—just bring your curiosity and get ready for a fun, social game! Or, join us for open play as your schedule allows.
Come solo and meet other players or bring your group! A full mahjong set-up will be provided during class, including all mahjong sets, instructional handouts, laminated cheat sheets, and NMJL cards available to borrow during class. Parking is complimentary for Mahjong Monday participants.

Beginner Mahjong Series (Full 3 Weeks)

Beginner Mahjong Series (Individual Dates)
Mahjong 101-Week 1 of the series
- History of mahjong, learn the tiles and deal, understand how to read the NMJL card, learn the Charleston, experience a general flow of game play
Mahjong 102- Week 2 of the series
- Take a deeper dive into the Charleston strategy, solidify rules of game play, and play ~2 games with instructor support.
Mahjong 103 - Week 3 of the series
- Review important rules of the game, discuss strategies for pivoting, determining which line to go for, etc., play ~2-3 games with instructor support, be prepared to play with anyone at the conclusion of the class!

Mahjong Open Play: Beginner Friendly

Already know the basics of mahjong but want more practice? Join us for open play. This is a friendly and social game for building confidence, refining rules through practice, and developing strategies. Did you just learn to play mahjong and want a place to practice? Are you an experienced player willing to play with all levels and looking to meet new people? Do you already have your group of 4 and just want to play? This is meant to be friendly, social, and community building. We will provide full mahjong set-ups. An instructor will be available for questions if they pop up, but it will mostly be self-guided independent play. Arrive early or stay late to mingle and eat from the Mahjong Monday menu at Kimpton Marlowe Hotel. Bring your own NMJL card. If you have the 2026 card, bring 2026 and 2025.

Your Instructors:
We are Beverly and Emily, a mother-daughter duo and experienced Canasta and American Mah Jongg instructors. We’ve taught hundreds of students and are passionate about making these games accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Beverly is a retired teacher, principal, and special education administrator. Emily is a high school special education teacher.

Photo/Video Policy: Photographs and videos will be taken at the classes and shared on social media, our websites, and for marketing purposes for The Canasta Connection and Kimpton Marlowe Hotel. At the start of the event, we will ask you to sign a model release form. Please inform us ahead of time if you wish to opt out of photos and videos taken during the classes.
Refunds
Refunds are allowed up until 7 days prior to the first class. Unfortunately we are not able to refund the cost of the eventbrite fee. If you are unable to attend within 7 days of the first class, you may have a friend take your place, or reach out to us.
