Join Rot & Fallow and Mahjong Matinee for a chill, social evening of Mahjong — a classic tile game of strategy, skill, and a bit of luck!
Don't know how to play? That's okay, come to learn, watch or simply hang with new or old friends.
Both Chinese and American versions played (links to video tutorials). Tiles & mats provided.
Free to attend, but kindly register to help us account for tables, attendees and food.
Light fare and drinks available for sale, including a special treat made by the mom of the founder of Rot & Fallow!
Rot & Fallow is a community-supported space so we are graciously asking for a $5 suggested donation with attendance.
🌐 Game History 🌐
Mahjong is a tile-game originating from China around the 1800s, and before that there was a card version with an even longer tradition. Since then, the Chinese game made its way to other countries and today there are at least 40 known variants of Mahjong around the world. The U.S., Singapore, and Japan, among others, have adopted their own versions of the game, reinterpreting and evolving it along the way.
🌳 On a personal note... 🌳
The founder of Rot & Fallow, Giulienne, grew up with her parents, aunties and uncles playing mahjong at home til the late hours of the night. Like for so many with an Asian heritage, it's a game with familial roots and nostalgia. Just like in her family home, her mom is making homemade lumpiang shanghai, a Filipino spring roll (for sale) - with possibly a side of a little friendly yelling over gameplay.
