If you’re a true disciple of the music of Jerry Garcia, then you’ll know that there are few deeper cuts than “Magnificent Sanctuary Band.” This bonus track on Cats Down Under the Stars is extremely obscure, yet if you’re lucky enough to hear it, you’ll find yourself instantly wrapped in the familiarity of its bubbly warmth and honeysuckle groove. In this sense, it’s the most appropriate name for a band like the one playing on this night at slice of sierra. Once their sound filters into your ears and you feel the infectious spirit of their vibe, it’s a full love surrender.
Coming to us from Humboldt County, MSB could be considered as the JRAD of Jerry Band tributes. While they do capture some of the tender moments of the catalog, this is more so a funky, soulful dance party than anything. They even find a way to weave their Phish influences amidst this hallowed material.
This quartet is comprised of seasoned veterans who channel the essence of JGB with passionate verve through every note. You’ll be captivated by one of the finest singing drummers in the land, Darin Mitchell (Moo-Got-2/Velvet Sea), alongside the explosive keyboard stylings of Brian Swislow (Object Heavy), bouncy bassist, Norman Bradford (Wild Otis/Dead On) and extra tasty guitarist, Bryan Kraus (Grateful Getdown/Velvet Sea).
MSB brings the Jerry Garcia songbook to life with a rotating setlist drawing from the full spectrum of the band’s eras. You know these cats have their fingers on the pulse when including interpretations drawn from the holy grail, jazz-funk-soul project, Legion Of Mary and unique versions from this endless catalog. The band keeps you on your toes and can take you into the ethers at any given moment.
