Holy Trinity Choir, accompanied by the Chameleon Arts Orchestra, will be performing the Oliver Tarneyβs stunning Magnificat on Sunday 28 September at 6pm.In this 2014 work in 12 movements, Tarney has interpolated the conventional text from the Gospel of Luke with Apocryphal and Old Testament texts as well as extracts from the Book of Maryam from the Qurβan. The fuller picture this paints completely changes the way we think of this important bible story and Tarney sets the whole with memorably exquisite musical colours which bow to no one. In a world riven with division and violence based on religious lines, this piece reminds us of what we could have in common if we looked a little harder.
The Magnificat will be sung by the 70-strong choral foundation at Holy Trinity, and will be preceded by the classic anthem, with its rarely heard string accompaniment, 'Blessed City, Heavenly Salem' by Edward Bairstow.
The concert will be without interval and will last a little over an hour. Refreshments will be available following the concert. We do hope you will join us for this remarkable repertoire in the stunning setting of Holy Trinity, Guildford.
All proceeds from the concert will go towards Holy Trinity's Choral Foundation and the 2026 Choir Tour to York Minster.
