A tribute to three “magicians of sound” who, each in their own era, pushed the boundaries of orchestration to create worlds of richness, clarity – and mystery. The concert opens in the mists of Impressionism with Debussy’s symphonic suite from Pelléas et Mélisande, a symbolist world where emotions are whispered rather than proclaimed.
In Fin de nuit for piano and orchestra, Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans unfolds a kaleidoscopic dialogue between soloist and orchestra, hovering on the blurred border between dream and dawn.
The evening closes with Wagner’s Vorspiel und Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde: the “Tristan chord” ignites a harmonic revolution and a perpetual musical longing that only finds release in Isolde’s final Liebestod.
