MAE NAAK, Somtow Sucharitkul’s most celebrated opera, returns in its fifth production since its premiere in 2003. Following three acclaimed stagings in Bangkok and a landmark production in London, the operatic incarnation of Thailand’s most feared—and fascinating—femme fatale has not been seen on a Thai stage since 2011.
This new production draws on the original designs by National Artist Sumet Jumsai, conducted by Thailand’s foremost opera conductor Trisdee na Patalung, and directed by the composer himself. It stars Thailand’s leading soprano Barbara Zion as Naak, the ghost who refuses to die, alongside Singaporean baritone Martin Ng as the devoted husband who cannot perceive that his long-lost wife belongs to the spirit world.
Somtow’s Mae Naak brims with the macabre energy of 1980s Grand Guignol horror, while remaining suffused with lyricism, exotic colour, and deep romantic longing. As Serious Theatre wrote of the London production:
“First staged in 2003, it is a stunning work that fuses a European operatic style with Thai folkloric music… I recommend that it return to London again, not least because of the extraordinary character of Naak herself, whose strength and desire elevate her to the stature of a tragic heroine, leading us on a musical journey of a soul struggling to find peace.”
