Join Augustana's Madison Alumni Chapter in celebrating Earth Day by volunteering at the UW Madison Arboretum on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.This is a family friendly activity. We'll likely be hand pulling woodland weeds — garlic mustard and maybe some dame's rocket — from an oak forest. No experience is necessary, Arboretum staff will provide the training, tools, and gloves needed to participate safely and successfully. We'll have a jug of water, though we always recommend people bring their own water bottles, as well. Please come dressed for outdoor work! Wear closed-toed shoes or boots, long pants, and whatever other clothes you require to work comfortably in tall and/or dense vegetation (long-sleeved layers, hats, sunscreen, etc.).
Safety Information
There are risks to this volunteer work, which include sprains, strains, cuts, broken bones, exposure to sun and cold, exposure to ticks/chiggers or other stinging insects, and exposure to infectious disease. Volunteers must adhere to proper safety procedures, which will be described by the Arboretum project leader at the start of your project. Volunteers are not covered by workers compensation insurance or any other university or state medical coverage. We encourage you to have your own health insurance. Note that there are no on-site bathrooms at the Curtis Lot location. The nearest bathroom is just down the road — a porta potty at the Arboretum Visitor Center (indoor bathrooms are available once the Center opens at 12:30pm).
Cancellations and Rain Plans
This is an outdoor project that is weather dependent. If it is raining, or if it has rained heavily in the 24 hours prior to the project's start time, it will be canceled. Registrants will be contacted the day before the work party if it seems likely that we'll need to cancel because of the weather.
