I am grateful and excited to be showing at the BMCA. I hope to connect with you April 3rd. The show runs through April 26th.MADEofTHIS
What began as an homage to the manual labor of her grandparents (as farmers and homesteaders in the early 1900s) grew into an exploration of the materials themselves and the tools that create them. Julie learned to process and spin raw sheep's wool, dye with plant dyes over an open fire, and weave twill cloth on a vintage four shaft loom. This turned into a labor of love, revealing her place among the work, inspiring her to learn how to shoot with a pinhole camera and create self portraits in landscapes from her youth (the beaches and flat, rural landscapes of Michigan).
Julie's wish: that this work offers a quiet space to dwell and discover how both the harshness and softness of life coexist, and how loving it all leads to a life well lived.
