About this Event
Pat Coil and his quintet, with Danny Gottlieb, Beth Gottlieb, Craig Nelson & Don Aliquo play the music and compositions of Lyle Mays.
As a member of the Pat Metheny Group, American jazz pianist and composer Lyle Mays (1953-2020) composed and arranged nearly all of the group's music, for which Mays won eleven Grammy Awards. Throughout his career Mays was nominated for four other Grammys for his own work. Mays met Pat Metheny in 1974, and founded the Pat Metheny Group with Pat. In the group, Mays provided arrangements, orchestration and the harmonic and metric backbone of the group's musical signature, and played piano, organ and synthesizers as well as various other instruments. Apart from his work with Metheny, Mays formed his own trio with Marc Johnson, Jack DeJohnette and Peter Erskine, and formed the Lyle Mays Quartet with Marc Johnson or Eric Hochberg, Mark Walker and Bob Sheppard. Mays also collaborated with electronic keyboard instrument makers Kurzweil and Korg to develop their new sounds since he had great knowledge of both computer programming and music synthesis that he learned by himself. His albums as a leader reflect a large variety of musical interests; "Street Dreams" builds on the content of the Pat Metheny Group, while "Fictionary" is a straight-ahead jazz trio session featuring Marc Johnson on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, and "Solo: Improvisations for Expanded Piano" focuses on solo piano improvisations. Mays was regarded by both professional musicians and music fans as one of the most innovative and creative jazz pianists and keyboardists, but he considered himself more of a serious contemporary composer with an advanced approach to classical music, harmonic aesthetics, and structural development through long forms.
