Mandela Bay Opera presents Lux Aeterna – Operatic Reflections around Easter, a Palm Sunday concert centred on the dramatic core of opera and sacred oratorio. Presented in the Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, the programme brings together some of the most emotionally charged music in the repertoire - music that confronts suffering, longing and ultimately renewal and rebirth. The programme features well-known excerpts from Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Mozart, Gounod, Mendelssohn, Franck and Handel. Familiar arias and ensembles (with some unexpected musical gems) promise a narrative from human darkness to eternal light.
Soloists Lindokuhle Gushu and Sinentlahla Ndala (soprano), Afika Gwam (tenor) and Lesego Mkhwanazi (bass-baritone) lead the programme, joined by the Le Strada Choral Society. The musical team is led by Kobus Buys as musical director and pianist, Anele Mutei (conductor), with Justin Stone on organ.
