About this Event
Long before Valentine’s Day, the ancient Romans celebrated Lupercalia — a mid-February festival of fertility, purification, and renewal that took place at the foot of the Palatine Hill. This illustrated talk explores what Lupercalia actually was, separating ancient evidence from modern myth. Drawing on classical sources including Ovid, Plutarch, Livy, and later Christian writers, we will examine the ritual practices of the festival, its mythological origins, and its connection to Romulus and Remus. The talk will also trace Lupercalia’s deeper roots in pastoral religion and its links to the Greek festival of Lykaia in Arcadia.
Suitable for anyone with an interest in ancient history, mythology, religion, or the origins of seasonal festivals — no prior knowledge required. +16 only for this event.
