About this Event
The writings produced by the poets of the First World War have played a significant role in shaping perceptions of the conflict in British popular memory. Sixteen of their number have been memorialised in Westminster Abbey since 1985, in tribute to the outpouring of verse that they produced during this period in Britain’s history.
In this lunchtime talk, Max Egremont will explore whether the pattern of initial optimism giving way to feelings of bitter disillusionment that is repeatedly present in the poetry of this period offers a fair representation of the First World War.
Egremont will discuss the lives and legacies of some of the poets memorialised in the Abbey and reveal what happened to those who survived the fighting, considering how the immense tragedy that they experienced shaped their future life and work.
