We are excited to announce our upcoming Luncheon in support of our WAVES for Hospice fundraiser, featuring guest speaker Vicki Keith. Dr. Vicki Keith Munro, CM, O.Ont, LLD, ChPC is a Canadian retired marathon swimmer, coach and advocate for disabled athletes. Her accomplishments include the first crossing of all five Great Lakes, a 100-hour swim and the world record distance of 80.2 kilometers swum using the butterfly stroke. Many people consider Keith as the face of marathon swimming.
From an early age, Vicki embraced her parents’ lessons on the value of making a meaningful impact in the lives of others. To honor this, she integrated a fundraising aspect into each of her swims. Vicki started her swimming career by raising $50,000 for Hospice Kingston. Her connection to this charity was deeply personal, as her mother and 2 friends had founded it. As Vicki’s swims became more global, so did her fundraising. In 1988, she
raised $548,000 for Variety Village in Scarborough, Ontario, and the following year she raised another $200,000 for Variety projects worldwide. In 2005, when the need for new opportunities for children with disabilities in Kingston, Ontario became apparent, Vicki came out of swimming retirement. She spent 63 hours
and 40 minutes in Lake Ontario, completing 80.2 kilometers butterfly, and raising an additional $260,000 for the YMCA in Kingston. This final swimming feat brought Vicki’s fundraising total to over one million dollars.
On this day, Dr. Keith will speak to our guests about swimming and her connection to hospice care.
