Exploring the story of 17th Centaury Surgeon Robert Auchmutie complete with courtroom drama, royal involvement, and an attempted jail break.Join us for this bite sized lunch time talk exploring the history of medicine.
Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Library and Archive Assistant Robin Fixter will discuss the little known story of Surgeon Robert Auchmutie.
On June 10th 1600, Robert Auchmutie became the only known Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh ever to be executed; being beheaded following a conviction for murder. The story of the duel which resulted in his death sentence, complete with courtroom drama, royal involvement, and an attempted jail-break, seems almost too colourful to have actually happened – yet it did.
Talks will last approximately 30 mins and there will be tea and coffee available for ticket holders.
