Tuesday, Oct. 14th, 12:00 PM--The Phantom Of The Opera (1943). Universal’s second go at Leroux’s story focuses more on music and spectacle than horror, but it’s a superb film in its own right. It’s also the first to introduce the device of the Phantom having been a normal man who was disfigured by accident, rather than being deformed by birth. Erique Claudin (Claude Rains), a violinist and would-be composer, is secretly paying for the voice training of soprano Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster), whom he loves from afar...but when he believes his composition is being stolen, it starts a confrontation which ends with him being disfigured by acid. Erique takes refuge in the cellars and continues his campaign for Christine’s success...which includes murder...
