Lunar Noon is what has come out of the last five years of Michelle Zheng's music-making. It evolved from a solo bedroom electronic recording project to a big band endeavor, with collaborators both in the bay and around the world contributing to the music. Though the instrumentation is expansive and relies on extensive collaboration to come to fruition, the content of the songs is always deeply personal - they are her means of observing and understanding her inner world. Musical influences include Björk, Imogen Heap, Claude Debussy, Sigur Rós, Esperanza Spalding, Silvia Pérez Cruz, Rita Payés, a decade of choral singing, a classical piano upbringing, and film/anime/video game soundtracks.
Originally from Santa Cruz, CA and now based in San Francisco, Michelle is deeply influenced by the sights and sounds of the forests and ocean that surround both of these places, which find their way literally into the music.
Last year, Lunar Noon released “A circle’s round,” a 66-minute long, two-and-a-half year labor of love about discovering the practice of mindfulness and learning to find peace in the wake of pain. Now, a year later, the party of a live band of vocals, piano, upright and electric bass, drums, strings, brass, and flute will finally bring these songs to life for you, along with some brand new surprises.
Michelle Zheng - vocals, piano
Théo Auclair - drums
Andrew Harlan - upright & electric bass
Caitlin Zittkowski - flute and vocals
Alex Krentsel - violin
Daniel Rothchild - cello
