Luke Haynes is an internationally acclaimed textile artist who has redefined quilting as a contemporary fine art form. Raised in poverty across the American South and diagnosed as autistic, Haynes turned to creative problem-solving as a way to build comfort, structure, and identity in a world that often felt unpredictable. Quilting became his language of survival—first as a self-taught teenager, and later as a lifelong practice of transformation.

Intimate Improv
This will be an amazing new spin on a quilting workshop!
In this class, we will be combining ideas of collage, scrapbooking, journaling, abstract art, and improv quilting to create intimate and playful sewing projects.
The class will start with a look at Luke's JOY Quilts series and recent memory quilts. Then, we will begin a series of exercises leading you to record emotions and memories in visual ways utilizing fabric, markers, and other craft supplies. Next, there will be opportunities to share and talk about what we've made. Finally, we will discuss how to combine everything into a finished quilt project!
Intimate Improv is an expectation-free creative oasis where you will have the opportunity to immerse your human experience, emotions, and joys into projects in visual ways (while using up scraps in your studio and around your home!). It will be a fun, laid-back class and a great way to spend the day.
Materials needed:
-scraps of extra fabric that make you happy (we recommend a good assortment of a lot of different colors, patterns, etc -- the goal is to bring a lot of bits so you can grab and cut pieces in a collage-style way. This is a great way to use up bits and pieces you have around in your studio as well!)
-any random trimming / binding / buttons / embellishments / supplies you might have laying around your studio that you need to use up. Bonus points if it brings you joy.
-any old clothing that you no longer wear and want to repurpose (we mean anything -- socks, shirts, underwear, shoe laces, dresses -- nothing is off-limits!)
-2 yards equivalent of a base fabric (doesn’t have to be matching)
-glue stick
-pins
-scissors
-pencil
-Sharpie / fabric marker / fabric paint (black will be the most useful, but if you have access to any other colors of fabric markers / paint, bring those too! Don't feel the need to go out and buy anything though, the method is super fun improvising with what you have as well!)
