Merirosvoista tulevat yleensä mieleen puujalat, papukaijat, silmälaput ja lankulla käveleminen. Harvemmin heitä kuitenkaan tarkastellaan vallan haastajina ja yhteiskunnallisten normien rikkojina. Merirosvolaiva oli kuitenkin, ainakin länsimaailmassa, mahdollisesti tasa-arvoisin yhteisö aikanaan – erityisesti merirosvouden kulta-aikana vuosina 1695–1725.Janne Nyströmin luento tarkastelee merirosvoja radikaaleina toimijoina, jotka rikkoivat aikansa hierarkioita ja rakensivat vaihtoehtoisia yhteisöjä. Samalla hän pohtii, mitä merirosvojen perintö voi tarjota nykyajan liikkeille ja vallankumoukselliselle ajattelulle.

When we think of pirates, we usually picture wooden legs, parrots, eye patches, and walking on a plank.
However, they are less often seen as challengers to power and transgressors of social norms.
However, at least in the Western world, the pirate ship may have been the most egalitarian community of its time – especially during the Golden Age of Piracy between 1695 and 1725.
Janne Nyström's lecture examines pirates as radical actors who defied the hierarchies of their time and built alternative communities. At the same time, Nytröm reflects on what the legacy of pirates can offer to contemporary movements and revolutionary thinking.
