Lucía Lacarra. "Lost Letters"
Lucía Lacarra is one of those rare ballerinas whose name has become synonymous with supreme plastic artistry, dramatic depth, and a true nobility of expression. Born in the Basque town of Zumaia, she entered the professional world of dance at an exceptionally young age, making her debut with Víctor Ullate Ballet at just fifteen. Very soon, her path was shaped by some of the world’s leading stages: Ballets de Marseille, San Francisco Ballet, the Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich, and later the Dortmund Opera — theatres where Lacarra became a principal dancer and developed her unmistakable artistic signature.
Throughout her career she has received the highest distinctions available to a ballet artist: the Nijinsky Award, the Prix Benois de la Danse, and the National Dance Award of Spain. In 2024, the Ministry of Culture of Spain awarded her the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes for 2023 — one of the country’s most prestigious state honours, bestowed for an outstanding contribution to the arts.
Today, Lucía Lacarra is not only a legendary performer but also the creator of her own artistic universe. Together with Matthew Golding, she develops large-scale original projects in which classical ballet merges with cinematic aesthetics, emotional theatricality, and profound human storytelling. Among their recent works are Fordlandia and In the Still of the Night, both recognised with the Max Award.
The production Lost Letters, which will be performed this evening, transports the audience into a world where a human destiny may hinge on a single line — on a letter that arrived, or never reached its destination. The story is based on a real letter written by a British soldier during the First World War and becomes a poetic stage parable about love, loss, and the strength of human connection.
The music of Sergei Rachmaninoff creates a vast emotional landscape — from the whisper of an intimate confession to the tremor of a tragic choice. The virtuosity of the company’s dancers, the visual beauty of the production, and the delicacy of its dramaturgy turn Lost Letters into a performance in which movement becomes text, and emotion becomes the central storyline.
