About this Event
The multilingual singer, songwriter and producer Luciane Dom is part of the new generation of contemporary artists from Rio de Janeiro representing Brazilian black music. Luciane´s performances incorporate various musical influences: from Afrobeat to Urban Jazz, Reggae, and Ijexá, and are calls to action, inviting audiences to dance, sing, and free their bodies. She has been featured at venues such as Brasil Summerfest at Lincoln Center, and was named Rising Star of the Year by the 2022 African Entertainment Awards. Her multilingual educational work primarily revolves around masterclasses with a focus on the Afro-Brazilian Candomblé and interactive classes covering traditional Brazilian rhythms including Samba, Bossa Nova, Forró, Axé and Maracatu.
Imagine if Count Basie went to Rio de Janeiro and combined his big band with a samba school. This only begins to describe the powerful and joyous energy of Gafieira Rio Miami, the 11-piece band founded and led by Latin GRAMMY winning (for his participation in Gloria Estefan’s 2021 album Brazil 305) bassist Diogo Brown. This phenomenal group features lively samba percussion, a swinging horn section, and the beautiful voice of Isa Duarte. Gafieira Rio Miami fuses samba, jazz and soul inspired by the joyous, 20th century Rio de Janeiro ballroom dance music known as “samba de gafieira”. Gafieira were the low-rent halls or honky tonks where starting in the early 20th century, the predominantly black underclass of Rio de Janeiro would go to enjoy live music, mainly samba, and practice couples' dancing. Soon after the sound of the big bands, then popular in the United States, reached Brazil, the musicians in Rio began to make it Brazilian, combining standard brass and horns with a samba rhythm section. With members from diverse backgrounds including Brazil, US, Venezuela and Cuba, Gafieira Rio Miami’s live repertoire includes gorgeous arrangements of classics by Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Caetano Veloso, Jorge Benjor, Alcione, Wilson das Neves, Moacir Santos and others.
