Newton Baroque would like to invite you to join us for an evening of music from 1550s Rome. The concert will center on music by Vicente Lusitano a composer active in Rome in the 1550s who came originally from Portugal and who appears to have been of mixed-race heritage with ancestry from West Africa. Lusitano is not well known today but for that matter most of the composers from the mid-16th Century are hardly household names. In an unusual modern twist there has been a growing fascination with the music of Lusitano because of his heritage that has created a sort of Lusitano “Renaissance” which has triggered not just attention on his music but a sort of renewed interest in the music from the mid-century. This music leans a bit more toward extravagance than the music from the previous or the subsequent generations. There is a focus on creating expansive sound palettes that linger in a sort of musical ecstasy. The sound is sumptuous generous and incredibly rich.
There will be a pre-concert lecture before the performance.
